Future Leaders Peer Mentoring
This free program, offered in partnership with the Des Plaines Youth Commission, allows younger students ages 8-13 to benefit from positive peer mentoring relationships with older high school students. Interaction is facilitated by recreational activities and time for constructive conversation and emotional support. High school volunteers are carefully selected and screened and all activities are directly supervised by MaineStay staff. This is a great opportunity for your child to have a positive older role model. Program goals include building confidence, increasing self-esteem, and enhancing social skills.
Future Leaders typically meets at the Des Plaines Leisure Center on the second and fourth Thursday of every month during the school year from 4-5:30 PM. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this program has been temporarily put on hold. Space is limited to 20 participants.
Volunteer High School Mentors Needed
We are looking for volunteers ages 15-18 willing to give 3 hours of time a month to serve as mentors to students ages 8-13. Future Leaders provides an easy way for high school students to serve as positive role models to younger students through a peer mentoring relationship. We make it simple to connect with younger students by planning recreational and team-building activities and time for constructive interaction, conversation, and emotional support. High school mentors benefit by making a positive contribution to their community, developing new friendships and relationships, and seeing first-hand the positive and lasting influence they can have on a young person’s life. If you’re interested in a career working with children or want to enhance your college applications, volunteering provides a rewarding experience for both younger students and for you! A small contribution of your time can change the course of a child’s life.

We are thrilled to partner with our local school districts to bring this peer mentoring program into the school setting.
